SFHHDF Auditions
Well, for two weeks we held SFHHDF live auditions for local companies (one company drove up here from LA however!). I have to tell you that the auditions this year were kinda disappointing. My panel and I saw a lot of the same stuff we have seen many times before. Many of the companies auditioning this year lacked originality and opted on looking dance "teamish" . The ones who did try to have a concept, message or artistic value either looked amateur or lacked enough hip hop style to be in the SF Hip Hop DanceFest.
***My definition of dance "team-ish" -
*formations as opposed to staging
*symmetrical staging and movements
*mainstream movements that are overused
*transitions that involve running to places with bodies bent over with arms strait down in fists (if i see that one more time *$#^....!)
*no concept- just a series of "routines"
*people trying to pick songs with words that express what they want to say instead of saying them with their bodies
*lip synching-- (oh god - please just dont!)
*bad use of props
*nothing new or original- cut and paste style
I say this as always out of love and respect. I hope that this feedback that both my panel and I had to share can be openly heard by some of these companies so we can see some differences next year.
In addition, my panel has agreed next year to personally go to companies who wish to audition and help them BEFORE their actual audition (If they want us to, of course). they will attend one or more rehearsals and give feedback in enough time for the company to make changes BEFORE their actual audition.
ISN'T THAT AMAZING???
