Hi Micaya,
My name is Lily and I am contacting you on behalf of Dr. Sonia Bell, a sports medicine physician that would like to volunteer her medical services for the Hip Hop Dance Fest in November.

Dr. Bell has an extensive and diverse sports background including work as a physician for the USA Track and Field team. She is also a former dancer for the San Francisco Ballet. Dr. Bell has attended your performances before and you two had spoken about her assistance for a future performance.

Attached is Dr. Bell's resume so you can learn a little more about her.
Please contact me at avantilily@aol.com

Thank you,

what an experience

SoulForce was booked to perform at some elementary schools recently as part of an arts integration program. The program seems to be great at teaching kids about dance choreography and the arts.
Beforehand, I showed a dvd of the exact pieces that SoulForce would perform , but as you can imagine, after seeing the pieces perform live, some of the teachers/parents had issues.
Many issues...
Some of them seemed understandable but most were ridiculous. Its been an interesting journey having this experience because we really have enjoyed performing for these kids.
Tomorrow is our last performance and it is bittersweet. We plan to enjoy ourselves with a final bang!

Then on to our next performance... SF Hip Hop DanceFest Baby! We are in program B!!

some more advice to dancers...

Occasionally I get passionate about the feeling of entitlement with young dancers. I have written about it in my blog before.
I see some dancers that are hungry and committed . They inspire me. Dance is important and it shows.

I need to let you know that the dancers that are coming here from Korea are doing so for the experience alone. (at least with the SFHHDF)They are flying here on Thursday and they have a tech rehearsal, run through and show on Friday. On Saturday, they fly to LA to perform. On Sunday morning they fly back to SF and perform again and fly home on Sunday evening! OMG!
The SFHHDF did not have any extra funds to be able to compensate them after flights and accommodations, yet they chose to come here anyway. They were booked to do the LA gig AFTER they were booked for the SFHHDF gig.
They are committed!

Dancers, a word of advice.. (whether you want it or not) .....
Please follow through with your prior commitments. Make sure people know that they can count on your word. If you come through on the "small stuff" then I know I can count on you for the "big stuff"

So the World of Dance Tour is next weekend in San Mateo. I have never been but will be attending this year. I will be judging the competition and receiving an award for my accomplishments in dance. I will let you know what it was like afterward ok?
I was planning to go to the JUICE hip hop festival in LA but realized that it is the same day! If you are in LA on Saturday, check it out and let me know how it was.

music

The music I am using this week is "The One" by Mary J. Blige with Drake.--- good song---
However, I am very disappointed in the music that is out right now- its pretty yucky! Alot of hip hop songs have such a pop feel to them and they dont inspire me to choreograph at all. What's up with that?

SFHHDF Auditions

Well, for two weeks we held SFHHDF live auditions for local companies (one company drove up here from LA however!). I have to tell you that the auditions this year were kinda disappointing. My panel and I saw a lot of the same stuff we have seen many times before. Many of the companies auditioning this year lacked originality and opted on looking dance "teamish" . The ones who did try to have a concept, message or artistic value either looked amateur or lacked enough hip hop style to be in the SF Hip Hop DanceFest.

***My definition of dance "team-ish" -

*formations as opposed to staging

*symmetrical staging and movements

*mainstream movements that are overused

*transitions that involve running to places with bodies bent over with arms strait down in fists (if i see that one more time *$#^....!)

*no concept- just a series of "routines"

*people trying to pick songs with words that express what they want to say instead of saying them with their bodies

*lip synching-- (oh god - please just dont!)

*bad use of props

*nothing new or original- cut and paste style

I say this as always out of love and respect. I hope that this feedback that both my panel and I had to share can be openly heard by some of these companies so we can see some differences next year.

In addition, my panel has agreed next year to personally go to companies who wish to audition and help them BEFORE their actual audition (If they want us to, of course). they will attend one or more rehearsals and give feedback in enough time for the company to make changes BEFORE their actual audition.
ISN'T THAT AMAZING???

So last Friday I was an honoree at the Independent Artist Week celebration. The celebration was held at the Fillmore Jazz Heritage Center Gallery,in the Yoshis building in SF
I was among a list of amazing Bay Area artists who received awards that night--:
Davey D, Keba Konte, Irene Hernandez-Feiks, Vicki Virk, Victor Reyers, DJ QBert, Gail Silva...

Melonie and Melorra Green are twin sisters who put on this event. Their company is called infin8sync , which strives to serve as a network for indie artists.
When at the reception , I happened to look up at the gallery of photos and paintings to find there was drawing of me on the wall. I was floored and delighted. Apparently, all the honorees of the evening had artists create a work on their behalf. The name of the artist who did my drawing is Bud Hauso. We had never met before and got a photo of me off the internet and then proceeded to do his own interpretation of it. what do you think?

Needless to say- I was super appreciative of the recognition and love ...

My letter to Bonner Odell at the SF Weekly

Hi Bonner
I am writing in response to your SF Fall Arts Preview edition in the SF weekly recently. I was completely surprised that the 11th annual San Francisco Hip Hop DanceFest was omitted completely from any of these lists.

The San Francisco Hip Hop DanceFest honors the artistry of hip hop dance and is one of the only dance festivals in the Bay Area that brings dance companies here from all over the world. We will be celebrating our 11th year of successful sold out shows this November at the Palace of Fine Arts and the SF weekly Fall Arts preview would have been a great reminder to our audiences.

Tickets for the 11th annual SFHHDF are on sale now at cityboxoffice.com . We are in the process right now in booking companies from Ireland, Norway , London, Canada, LA and New York to name a few.

I am disappointed to think that the SF Weekly has somehow taken this Bay Area landmark event off their list of important and quality events happening here in the Bay.

Thank you for your time,

SoulForce Dance Co. Auditions last night

So last night was the auditions for my dance company, SoulForce Dance Company. It went very well. We had about 20 people audition and they were all very good dancers . We taught them some excerpts of pieces that were in our repertoire.

It was inspirational to see and feel the energy of these dancers.

I am in the process today of contacting the people who I am interested in, I will give you the final list at a later date.

So I had to drive back to Oakland last night from SF the LONG way over the San Mateo Bridge because of the Bay Bridge closure. I ended up giving a ride to Brandy, Jessie and Kennette.
We had girl talk the WHOLE way back , mainly talking about what famous people we thought were attractive (At midnight after dancing for hours, it is fun and doesnt take to much brain power..). There were many names thrown out, but I think there were a few that everyone likes. Andre 3000, Johnny Depp, Will Smith to name a few..

OH NO! MAJOR PROBLEM!

If you bought merchandise at the San Francisco Hip Hop DanceFest last year (Nov 2008) PLEASE READ THIS!!!!

We made a huge error by NOT finalizing the sale on the credit card machine for merchandise sold on the last day of the SF Hip Hop DanceFest last year. We just realized this the other day when we were finalizing the credit card donations from last weekends' fundraiser.
When we printed out the credit card receipt for last weekends' donations, the merchandise sales from the last day of the 2008 SF Hip Hop DanceFest came up on the receipt as well. I checked the 2008 merchandise receipts and they matched exactly!

Somehow we did not finalize the final sale for the last day of merchandise sales last year and the charges were still in the machine! That means that if you purchased any merchandise on the Sunday of the SFHHDF last November by credit card, you were NOT charged for it then, will charged for it now in August! I double checked and these charges were NOT processed in November, you are not being charged twice. We just never did it properly in November.

I am so sorry!
This was such a huge mistake.
If you have any questions about this, please email me at info@sfhiphopdancefest.com

Great Weekend!

So sorry It has taken so long to report on whats up with the DanceFest after the big fundraiser weekend. The weekend was fantastic! Both shows were sold out, the party was packed, and everyone was super supportive!
Ok so the shows were so much fun. First of all, in between each performance, there were different people from the SFHHDF community who spoke about the DanceFest. They all had such amazing things to say that made me warm and fuzzy. It reminded me of the impact the SF Hip Hop DanceFest has had on the hip hop dance community AND to the youth dance community. It reminded me that these kids could have been focusing their attention and energy in many other much less positive areas. However, they remained focused on dance and because of it they thrived and also the audience thrived as well because to see them dance is a blessing!
All the performances were SO fucking good! It always blows my mind that the Bay Area is so incredibly rich with talent - it makes me proud!

Allright-- so at the end of the show, it was time to make the appeal to the audience for donations. On Friday it was Teela and I and on Saturday night , it was Allan and I. There was NO SHAME in what we did to try to raise money for the SFHHDF! We dropped it like its hot, we bumped and grinded! We asked people to get their wallets out and hand us their 20s,10s, 5s, 1s, and pocket change!

On Saturday I thought to myself, I know folks at the ballet and opera dont have to do all this to make money for their organization! Oh well, it was fun!

So all in all - before the fundraiser weekend, we were about $19,000 in debt-
NOW we are an estimate $10,000 in debt!
We made about $9000 last weekend for the SFHHDF! THANK YOU!!!
WOOO-HOOO!!!!!
Its time to do this show now!! This CAN be done! Im So excited to present the SFHHDF this year. There are SO many amazing companies that have submitted this year and I am ready to book them and finalize their contracts!!!

If you havent had a chance to help out yet, you still can- go to www.sfhiphopdancefest.com and go to the donate page.

Every little bit helps y'all!

Stern Grove Kids Days

Last week SoulForce and I had the opportunity to teach dance to a lot of children at the Stern Grove Kids Days. It is a kids outreach program where children can learn different styles of dance for free. Each week they learn a different style and we had hip hop week! For three days we got to meet and teach three different groups of kids and teach them a dance and have them do a small performance afterward.
There were a LOT of children! Oh my! Every day we had about 300 kids!
They were super cute and super fun. There were some great dancers too.

Hopefully we will do it again next year.

SFHHDF Going To be in a High School Text Book

Ok ,I got this email last week and I didnt understand it completely, so I sent it to Sterling to see if she could explain it to me. She responded to the sender with her questions to find out that they were interested in using the SF hip Hop DanceFest in their high school textbooks for english language in Brazil. What? Weird huh? But it was for real and we are going to be in these textbooks!
love and respect-
Micaya

Dear sir/miss,
Macmillan Publishers Brazil is preparing an English Language Teaching series for Brazilian high-school students. These are the series's main features:

Title: Prime
Authors: Reinildes Dias, Leina Jucá, Raquel Faria
Publishing date: September 2009
Territory: Brazil
Print run: 18,000

Therefore, I'm writing you to ask for your permission to do so; if we have your agreement, I would ask you the favor of providing high definition file of this advertisement (300 dpi+), to assure good printing quality.

Looking forward to hearing from you, I send you my
Best wishes.

Sincerely,
Fernando Santos
Coordinator of Editorial Processes
Macmillan Brazil

Dear Fernando,
We are a little confused... Could you please explain the context in which you will be using our logo and show information?
You want to include them in a high school textbook to teach English to Brazilians? Is there text that will accompany them that you can send to us to review? Will there be any kind of credit or information about our show? How did you select our show logo and information to include in your text book?

Please send us some more information so we can consider your request - thank you,
Sterling Larrimore

Art Director
San Francisco Hip Hop DanceFest
www.sfhiphopdancefest.com

Dear Sterling,
Thank you for your message. Let me answer to your questions:
-- Yes, it's a high school textbook to teach Eanglish to Brazilians
-- I'm sending herewith a rough version of the context in which we would use information about your show. If you give us the permission, we could use the very elements of your ad (in which case we would need a high definition image (300 dpi+) of it).
-- We'll put the credits you consider appropriate.
-- In this unit ("Hip Hiop culture")we try to highlight some aspects of hip
hop culture to Brazilian students, presenting differente kinds of text
(lyrics, ad, graffitti).

I hope this may answer to your questions. Anyway, feel free to contact me if there's any other doubt.

Thank you for your attention and
Best wishes.
